Fred Herscovitch: Paintings - Micro Art

Micro Art is a series of fourteen acrylic paintings based upon photomicrographs of crystalline structures and botanical life. Although the paintings resemble abstract art, they are actually faithful versions of the photomicrographs, and are therefore a form of realism.

Two of the paintings are "octograms", structures having eight-fold symmetry, in which various elements are arranged. The Crystal Octogram, a six-foot square canvas, arranges hundreds of crystals within this structure so that each one has eight mirror reflections. (In contrast, a kaleidoscope has five-fold symmetry.) The Snowflake Octogram arranges snowflakes and coloured beads in eight-fold symmetry.

The masterpiece of the series is Amino Acid DL Isoleucine which took more than five years of steady work to complete. Because this particular amino acid is essential for all human life, it encompasses all categories of race, religion, nationality, and even time and place. In this way, Micro Art is a Universal Art Form for every era.

I am indebted to the late Lewis R Wolberg, MD, for his generous permission to base the following paintings upon photomicrographs published in his book Micro Art:

Tungsten Crystals, Rochelle Salts, Martensite, Needles of Rochelle Salts, Amino Acid DL Isoleucine, and Titanium Crystals.
